  1. [10:23:39] <SteelGolem> doodles were supposed to be simple/single play mechanics for me to play with
  2. [10:23:57] <SteelGolem> i know this is the direction i need to go in, but i keep losing track of that
  3. [10:24:57] <SteelGolem> i don't need a "challenge" but i do need to get serious about this
  4. [10:25:09] <SteelGolem> this is the most important thing for me to be doing as far as my gamedev future goes
  5. [10:28:27] <SteelGolem> i keep thinking of the sword mechanic in zelda1
  6. [10:28:35] <SteelGolem> i feel like i need to think about this for some reason
  7. [10:28:45] <SteelGolem> i don't know what it is i need to be thinking about though
  8. [10:28:57] <SteelGolem> that's the problem, i have hints but i can't figure out what they're hinting at
  9. [10:30:17] <SteelGolem> let's see if i can follow this thread somewhere:
  10. [10:30:52] <SteelGolem> "what if i make a doodle where you can control link with his sword and fight an 'accurate' octorok?"
  11. [10:31:11] <SteelGolem> i would have to change the graphics and name
  12. [10:31:20] <SteelGolem> and i would give link 8 directions, as well as the octorok
  13. [10:31:39] <SteelGolem> in the first place, it's kind of unfair because the octorok can projectile vomit and link can't
  14. [10:31:51] <SteelGolem> but before that, what's the octorok doing there?
  15. [10:31:54] <SteelGolem> why do i have to kill it?
  16. [10:32:43] <SteelGolem> and then, i would have to remove touching damage because that's bullshit
  17. [10:33:29] <SteelGolem> and as a result of that i'd have to look at how to deal with touching - can link pass through the octorok?
  18. [10:34:11] <SteelGolem> getting back to the octorok
  19. [10:34:15] <SteelGolem> what is it even doing?
  20. [10:34:23] <SteelGolem> it's just walking around and shooting rocks randomly
  21. [10:34:27] <SteelGolem> that shit doesn't even make sense
  22. [10:34:52] <SteelGolem> suppose it doesn't shoot rocks without provocation
  23. [10:35:02] <SteelGolem> why is it there, and why is it walking around randomly?
  24. [10:35:12] <SteelGolem> what do octoroks do in the run of a day?
  25. [10:35:23] <SteelGolem> is it looking for food? is it looking for a mate?
  26. [10:35:46] <SteelGolem> does it care that link is there? how does it feel about things that aren't octoroks?
  27. [10:35:50] <SteelGolem> how does it feel about other octoroks?
  28. [10:36:21] <SteelGolem> if i answer even one of these questions, it's not an octorok anymore
  29. [10:41:49] <SteelGolem> if i change anything about how it acts, then it becomes my own creature
  30. [10:42:14] <SteelGolem> now, i'm not terribly interested in making a monster that is basically a land-crawling octopus
  31. [10:42:37] <SteelGolem> and i certainly don't want to make a creature that regugitates rocks and spits them so hard that it hurts you
  32. [10:43:12] <SteelGolem> the most bizarre thing about them is that they're /the first enemy you encounter in the game/
  33. [10:43:48] <SteelGolem> instead of making a boring mob that moves very slowly and doesn't present any challenge, so the player can get used to the controls
  34. [10:44:20] <SteelGolem> they create an immediate danger and you have to deal with it
  35. [10:44:35] <SteelGolem> that's kind of exciting in a way, i guess i can understand why you'd do that
  36. [10:45:11] <SteelGolem> considering the battling side of things, the game starts you in a safe zone and when you move to the next screen, you're immediately in danger
  37. [10:45:32] <SteelGolem> but you can always go back to the safe area to collect yourself
  38. [11:14:49] <SteelGolem> i guess that's what i'm after, i want even the animals in my world to have character
  39. [11:15:04] <SteelGolem> just putting things in randomly just for the sake of having "an enemy" is silly
  40. [11:15:34] <SteelGolem> they get reduced to movement patterns after a while
  41. [11:15:40] <SteelGolem> you don't think any more about them after that
  42. [11:15:57] <SteelGolem> i want every pebble to have a reason for existing
