  2. [10:59:33] <steelgolem> hey @timbeaudet
  3. [10:59:41] <steelgolem> is there such a thing as a 'game developer coach'
  4. [10:59:50] <steelgolem> someone i can pay to tell me what i should be doing to make my game
  5. [11:00:04] * timbeaudet could be a game developer coach.
  6. [11:00:23] <steelgolem> so many of us lack direction
  7. [11:00:30] <steelgolem> maybe not many can pay others to give them direction
  8. [11:00:31] <steelgolem> but i can
  9. [11:00:38] <steelgolem> i've been wanting to find someone like this for years
  10. [11:01:29] <steelgolem> how would it work?
  11. [11:01:51] <steelgolem> i was thinking about paying someone for "consulataion"
  12. [11:01:52] <timbeaudet> I could probably easily do this task, I'm not entirely sure how it would be structured. I am on a short vacation this week you got *really* lucky to catch me.
  13. [11:02:03] <steelgolem> but i hadn't come up with a proper title for the task until literally 2min ago
  14. [11:02:11] <steelgolem> hahaha
  15. [11:02:14] <steelgolem> thanks an
  16. [11:02:15] <timbeaudet> I will definitely consider a few ideas and get back to you. By chance are you on Discord?
  17. [11:02:15] <steelgolem> man
  18. [11:02:22] <steelgolem> i am, lemme sign in
  19. [11:02:39] <steelgolem> i once took a japanese learning program called "silver spoon"
  20. [11:02:50] <steelgolem> they gave a few tasks every day to work you towards mastery

  22. [11:04 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: RE: Game Development Coaching
  23. [11:04 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: My approach, without thinking much on the idea yet, would probably be to look at the game and direct on what is the most lacking bits. The bits most in need of iteration as it stands this moment.
  24. [11:05 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: Maybe each week, month etc (perhaps dependent on your motivation/time), I'd get a build and test it out to see the changes and list the tasks necessary.
  25. [11:06 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: Is something like this what you had in mind? This was only 15 seconds of thinking about it, so take it for what it is - I will continue pondering.
  26. [11:06 AM] SteelGolem: that would definitely be the idea moving further into the project
  27. [11:06 AM] SteelGolem: the problem right now is that i don't have a project
  28. [11:07 AM] SteelGolem: after 10 years or more of failed starts and folder clears
  29. [11:07 AM] SteelGolem: i'm basically still at square 1
  30. [11:07 AM] SteelGolem: i've gotten really good at setting up the project, though.
  31. [11:08 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: That is a hard trap to get out of. idk if you often write the engine for a game, like sprite handling etc.
  32. [11:08 AM] SteelGolem: i've tried cloning games similar to what i want, i've tried making prototypes of features
  33. [11:09 AM] SteelGolem: i can code the things when i'm clear on what i need them to do
  34. [11:09 AM] SteelGolem: the code really isn't the problem, i guess it's project management and direction that i'm lacking something with
  35. [11:10 AM] SteelGolem: constant prolonged life interruptions cause me to get way off track, if not completely
  36. [11:11 AM] SteelGolem: since it's a personal project and not one i'm going to make money off of, every entry point is a valid one
  37. [11:12 AM] SteelGolem: but (say) in 2 weeks of time away from the project, the entry point i picked isn't interesting to me and i wonder why i wanted to start there
  38. [11:12 AM] SteelGolem: since i've never worked in the industry i don't know anything about being managed, much less about maanging
  39. [11:12 AM] SteelGolem: *managing
  40. [11:12 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: After a break from a project it is always hard getting back in, no matter what.
  41. [11:16 AM] SteelGolem: anyways i'm interrupting your off time
  42. [11:16 AM] SteelGolem: enjoy it
  43. [11:16 AM] SteelGolem: i'll keep an eye on discord and keep flailing at the project
  44. [11:17 AM] SteelGolem: and by "flail at project" i mean "play mobile games instead of doing the things"
  45. [11:17 AM] TimBeaudet 🏎: Some things that have seemed to help me:
  46. 1. Ensure the build is in working condition before taking break. No matter what.
  47. 2. Keep code quality as high as possible, optimize for readability. This is why I'm a nut with explicit code.
  48. 3. Don't feel bad about said break, this is tricky, but just tell yourself the break was necessary / felt good by itself.
  49. 4. Start on something small, text changes, color changes, placement, minor polish things. This will build momentum.
  50. 5. There is no 'wrong' thing to work on. Everything needs attention and the order doesn't exactly matter.
  51. [11:18 AM] SteelGolem: thanks for your time today
  52. [11:19 AM] SteelGolem: send me the bill later
